Qualified Saddle Fitters Course

Venue:                              Moulton College, Northants


Length of course:              4 days of tuition and one of assessment.


Dates:      Course: 4th – 7th July 2016           

Assessment: 28th October 2016

(Overseas candidates to be assessed on 8th July)




Object of the course:


To make available the advanced principles of the SMS recommended saddle fitting system to members of the Society of Master Saddlers (UK) Ltd and their employees and UK saddle fitters who meet the attendance criteria.  Delegates undertake assessment for the City & Guilds / SMS Certificate in Saddle Fitting.


Criteria for attendance:


Candidates must fulfil all of the following criteria:


  1. Be in full time employment with a fully paid up member of the Society of Master Saddlers (UK) Ltd or be a member in their own right as a Qualified Saddler, Master Saddler or Trainee Saddle Fitter.


submit written recommendations for attendance from 3 SMS members (from a minimum of 2 membership categories)

  1. Be, or have the services of, a fully qualified saddler to carry out saddle flocking and adjustments
  2. Have at least three years’ experience in saddle fitting  (Fulfilment of this criteria is vital as the level of tuition assumes that delegates are experienced saddle fitters)
  3. Have previously attended the Introductory Course in saddle fitting or submit details of formal saddle fitting courses attended and it will be considered whether these can be taken as equivalent to the Introductory Course.
  4. At least one year to have elapsed between attendance of Introductory Course and Qualification course.


Members’ Fee:                          Course - £1,360 + VAT @ 20%              Assessment - £330 + VAT


Non-members’ Fee:                  Course - £1,630 + VAT @ 20%              Assessment - £330 + VAT



Course Fee Includes         Four full days of practical and theory lectures

                                        College Accommodation and all meals and refreshments




Candidates will be assessed on the following procedures:


Written paper, Conformation & Action in Hand, Saddle Assessment and Fault Identification, Taking Templates and Practical Saddle Fitting of two horses.
